Niveau : Moyen / Difficile — Durée estimée : 40 min — 5 textes avec questions et corrections détaillées

Rappel des notions clés

At the B2 level (Upper Intermediate), you are expected to understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics. This includes technical discussions in your field of specialization. It's not just about knowing the words, but understanding the tone, the author's opinion, and the subtle links between ideas.

Key strategies for B2 reading include skimming (reading quickly for the general idea), scanning (looking for specific information), and using context clues to guess the meaning of unknown vocabulary. You should also be familiar with common idioms and phrasal verbs which are frequently used at this level.

Pay close attention to "connectors" or "linking words" (e.g., nevertheless, furthermore, on the other hand). These words act as signposts that tell you how the argument is developing. Understanding them is crucial for answering questions about the logical flow of the text.

Strategy: Read the questions BEFORE the text to know exactly what information you are looking for.

Exercices — Niveau Moyen

Exercice 1 : Read the sentence: "Despite the torrential rain, the event was a roaring success." What does this imply about the event?

Correction :

The word "despite" indicates a contrast. Even though the weather was very bad (torrential rain), the event was very successful ("roaring success" is an idiom for a great achievement).

Exercice 2 : In the phrase "He couldn't quite put his finger on what was wrong," what is the speaker's state of mind?

Correction :

The idiom "to put one's finger on something" means to identify something exactly. Here, he "couldn't quite" do it, meaning he had a feeling something was wrong but couldn't identify the specific reason.

Exercice 3 : Choose the best synonym for 'mitigate' in: "Government measures were taken to mitigate the effects of the crisis." (A) Increase (B) Reduce (C) Ignore.

Correction :

The correct answer is (B) Reduce. To mitigate means to make something less severe, serious, or painful.

Exercices — Niveau Difficile

Exercice 4 : Read this short text: "The rise of remote work has been a double-edged sword. While it offers flexibility, it often blurs the lines between professional and personal life." What is the author's main point?

Correction :

The author argues that remote work has both advantages and disadvantages. The expression "double-edged sword" is the key to understanding this dual perspective.

Exercice 5 : "The CEO's speech was nothing if not ambitious." Does the author think the speech was ambitious?

Correction :

Yes, extremely. The structure "nothing if not [adjective]" is an emphatic way of saying that the person or thing possesses that quality in a very high degree.

Exercice 6 : Text: "The project was scrapped due to a lack of funding, much to the chagrin of the local community." How did the community feel?

Correction :

They felt annoyed, disappointed, or embarrassed. "To the chagrin of" is a formal expression used to describe a feeling of frustration or annoyance caused by a failure or disappointment.

Exercice 7 : Identify the tone: "Oh great, another meeting that could have been an email." (A) Sarcastic (B) Enthusiastic (C) Informative.

Correction :

The tone is (A) Sarcastic. The speaker uses "Oh great" to express the opposite of excitement about a waste of time.

Exercice 8 : What does 'vouch for' mean in: "I can vouch for her integrity; we've worked together for years."?

Correction :

It means to confirm or guarantee from personal experience that something is true or that someone is of good character.

Bilan et conseils

Ce qu'il faut retenir : B2 level is about nuances. Look for transition words and idioms. Don't panic if you don't know every word; focus on the overall message and the logic of the argument. Practice reading various sources like news articles and essays.
